Our aim is to implement a local multimedia hub for promoting community development and cultural entrepreneurship. Serving also as a technology lab, the hub in Sligoville will empower local residents with new media applications to further engage the global Jamaican community; so that all may have an opportunity to participate in developing the future of our homeland.
The goals of the project are as following:
- To promote social enterprise in Sligoville.
- To establish greater levels of self-sufficiency and empowerment in Sligoville.
- To create connections between Sligoville residents, intra-island communities and globally.
- To focus the creative energy of teens, enabling them to harness the local, unique source of cultural content.
- To establish Sligoville as a model for other rural communities across Jamaica.
- To create and produce appropriate cultural and educational material for publication on Jamlink.com.
Nuts & Bolts
A 20-foot shipping container/computer lab aggregated with capabilities for narrowcasting multi-media content such as live audio and video; facilitates training and workshops, serve as production studio for a neighborhood newsletter; and advanced Internet connection and functionality for streaming live on Jamlink.com.
Funding
The projected cost of the Sligoville Initiative is US $50,000. To raise this necessary capital we are using the Jamaica Matters Fund (JMF) to garner tax-deductible support from individuals and organizations. The Jamaica Matters Fund was established primarily as a funding program to increase our capacity throughout Jamaica - and will exist in perpetuity as an association with Vonergy Inc., a non-profit and registered 501(c) (3) Charitable Organization. Federal Tax Identification: 57-1206488
Please Click here to make a contribution using PayPal. All contributions are tax-deductible and will be posted on our website. All transactions are in U.S. dollars and will be processed through Jamlink.com’s PayPal account.
Advertising Sponsorships
Twenty-five percent of the advertising revenues on Jamlink.com will be allocated to the Sligoville Initiative. We offer advertising sponsorships on the "virtual yard" - We offer a monthly subscription on the "virtual yard" - a unique broadcast and advertorial platform with prolonged value for participating companies, organizations and individuals to support community enhancement projects throughout Jamaica.
The "virtual yard" is a grid-map of Jamaica. Each grid measures 15 x15 pixels and is available for the sponsorship price of $100 per month. There are 332 spaces on the "virtual yard", each serving as a digital representation for our resourcefulness, collective expertise and experience; and is a reliable reference point for Jamaican networking, partnership and collaboration.
Benefits of advertising sponsorship on the virtual yard:
- increased site traffic
- a greater sphere of influence within the online Jamaican community
- an opportunity to generate sales from valuable click-through
- and a real win-win opportunity for business owners to offer support while increasing customer reach
How does your support benefit Jamaica?
We anticipate that an asset-based approach to community building coupled with socio-culturally constructive community technology, will cause an increase in community social capital (Mattesich & Monsey, 1997; Putnam, 1995) and will facilitate the activation of community cultural capital (Bourdieu & Passeron, 1977; Lamont & Lareau, 1988; Zweigenhaft, 1993), as a result of residents' involvement as active agents of change and active producers of community content.

President SCBFA 09 Do we forever have to be so preoccupied with "personal agenda" even when the corporate orientation of an initiative is abundantly clear? Perhaps my perspective is skewed due to the absence of "tech. savvy" but I would rather view positive suggestions for improving the product as against attempts by persons to advance their "superior knowledge". |

The Sligoville Initiative Greetings, I think this is a outdated method of providing Internet to a Jamaican Community. We have in Jamaica the Universal Access Fund. That is there to provide Internet access to every community centre. If that is put in then all we need to do is, every Jamaican that has family members here send a used or new Laptop and our problem solved. No need to put 10 computers in a hot box. -- One love |

The Sligoville Initiative I am curious to know how this project interacts with the Rastafari community via the EDUMAC-Ethio-Africa Union Millennium Council, the umbrella organization of the broadest rep of Rasta organizations with a focus on Pinnacle as the ancestral heritage site of Rastafari. There is much collective strength in recognizing the common heritage of one of the first free indigenous communities |
