One of the reasons that I live in Wisconsin is the changing seasons. I like the changes in scenery and weather that follow the rotation of the earth around the sun. My desk is positioned in front of the window in my office. As I work my computer monitor is edged by the world outside. In the winter, I can see children and dogs romping in the snow, the bare tree branches framed by a sky that is sometimes a gorgeous blue and sometimes a dreary grey, and people strolling by taking their daily exercise in the crisp air (you must remember that the definition of crisp is relative – in Wisconsin people wear shorts when the temperature gets above 65oF). All invigorating and all beautiful. But it is a trifle cold. It takes me five minutes to put on all the layers I need to walk up the road to my mailbox (no, I am not a native of Wisconsin). Fortunately, I get to escape every so often and visit our programs in Jamaica. I will do so at the end of January – I will spend two weeks, not in the fun and sun as friends assume, working with some of our upcoming Service Learning Volunteers and with our Jamaica-based team. I look forward to meeting some of our Service Learning Volunteers in person. I get to know them through their application essays, emails, and our pre-trip briefings but I rarely get to actually meet them. Our Jamaica-based team has that pleasure. During this trip I will get to meet and work with two volunteers (alright, I will take one day at the beach but it is because that is the eco-trip these volunteers requested) and a possible collaborator. Won’t you consider joining us as we flee the doldrums of winter? http://www.bluemountainproject.org Cathy Skoula
