Televangelist Unmasked in Sex Scandal

The Jamaican media love to play games. They love gossip and riddles and mystery more than they love reporting the news and keeping the public informed. So for the third day, today Wednesday, the print media is still reporting that "a prominent NY pastor" has been detained by the police in connection with carnal knowledge of a 15 year old.. Were the man considered of no consequence, you bet his name would be plastered all over the papers and the salacious details exposed without any apology.

But no, this NY pastor has a doctorate in Divinty and is much loved and recognized for his healing ministry, and his promotion of Miracle Olive OIl soap that he claims cures even cancer and HIV/AIDS. His arrest in full view of thousands of attendees at his tent crusade in Little London Wesrmoreland, sparked the outrage of his local hosts, who were quite convinced that it was a "set up" and the pastor is 'a man of God" who has revealed by the Spirit God's will for their lives. Never mind the little ones he led astray.

Just the day before he took to the stage, the man of God invited two minors, one 14 and the other 15, to accompany him to Clarendon. Upon his return to his hotel late Saturday night, hotel staff became suspicious when the girls accompanied him to his room. Well, as was reported in the news, he twice engaged in sexual relations with the 15 year old while the younger one looked on, and ater it wa all over paid them US$55 and $35 for the pleasure.

Now if memory serves me correct, the Bible says it would be better that a millstone be cast around his neck and he be plunged into the sea, since he has offended one of these "little ones". Spoken by the same Jesus who taught "Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not, for of such is the kingdom of heaven" Do you think the good pastor believes that? I don't think so, Even for a reprobate without any degrees of divinity and ecclesiastical titles this would be an eggregious act, and we would want to see the perpetrator punished to the full extent of the law.

But many church folk seem to believe their pastors should be immune from the rule of law, so they close ranks and maintain a heavy impenetrable silence until the heat is off and the miscreant is safely absconded, dusted off and ready to indulge in his pedophile fantasies again.

By their unscrupulousness, these church officials have chased people out of the church while they continue to fatten themselves off the widows' mites and the hard-earned cash of their flock. Sometimes you feel these sheep deserve to be scammed, since it's their own greed and blind trust that encourages that kind of behaviour in their leaders. But scratch below the surface and you see so many who are searching and wanting to believe in a power greater than themselves. and if the message of hope brought by the Miracle Olive OIl and Snake Oil peddler can lift them from their private lives of despair, they will pay handsomely for the relief.

So why have most of the newspapers kept the identity of the randy reverend a secret, even though divulging it would ratchet up their sales? Because in Jamaica we tiptoe around the church. We don't want to be seen as flying in the face of the Almighty and inviting his vengeance upon ourselves. And the pastors themselves will quickly warn you "Touch not the Lord's annointed" as if their claim of annointed stature grants them immunity to rule of law and judgment by their peers and congregations.

The church community in Jamaica will remain strangely silent. They'll all pretend they haven't heard and they haven't a clue who put on a sex show with a 15 year old to an audience of one, another minor.

On Monday night TVJ let the cat out of the beg and disclosed that the mystery man involved in the caper was none other than Dr. Paul Lewis, televangelist, pastor, self-proclaimed healer and preacher who heads a fairly large congregation in Brooklyn, New York, and was flown down to Jamaica to deliver God's word at a series of tent crusade meetings. Well on Saturday night the words remained stuck in his throat when the police nabbed him just before he took to the pulpit.

Jamaicans need to come to their senses and stop supporting these charlatans. There are obvious signs that these who profess the faith are impostors, and if you want to continue giving them your money and thinking rhat they have some kind of exclusive straight line to God, go ahead. You can't say you weren't warned.

The Pastor will not of course, go to jail for the Jamaican equivalent of statutory rape. He will tiptoe back into the US and deny before God that any hanky panky took place, or he may burst into tears like Jimmy Swaggart and ask for God's mercy, with the cameras rolling and his church weeping with him..

God and the congregation will forgive him, and the DVD will be on sale for $30.

Who cares that he may have initiated two minors into a life of prostitution?

-1 #14 Hunter 2009-07-29 10:50 I am going to follow this case to see if the man of god has to answer for his crime. Knowing how justice works in Jamaica, he may drop some cash to the parent of the girls to keep them from showing up to give any testimony against him. And after the cae is dropped he will jet back to New York and continue with his shenanigans while he sells miracle oil and soap. And folks will keep on sending him money. Can't understand how black people could be so stupid. Quote

0 #13 Jenny 2009-07-14 06:07 I know that at age 13 I was still a child. I still cringe at the thought of that lecher who under the guise of Christianity tried to molest me. Those who believe that because girls can get pregnant from age 8-13, makes it okay to tear them apart are indeed sadists. until you are a female of 13 who wants nothing else than to be a child you will never understand. +1 #12 Jen 2009-07-02 05:00 Duane, do yourself a favor and do a search for \"pastor arrested\" in Google. You will be surprised at the rate at which they are falling. And officials within the church have remained mum on the subject for fear of focusing public attention on the high incidence of misdemeanors among its ranks. But if they are intent on ignoring the trends, the rest of the public is not. Many congregations, among them children have been wronged and are hurting; a few of these so-called pastors are just working the flock to get rich. You see it all the time, their preoccupation with collecting money and selling trinkets. They have no supervision or governing body to discipline or oversee them, so when they get up to their tricks and are exposed, they offer hush money to the victims and after a while move on to stalk their next prey. And their favorite line of defense? \"Touch not the Lord\'s anointed!\" Surely God couldn\'t be a part of this. Quote

0 #11 travelfox 2009-06-29 16:03 Do we really believe God or Nature made it so girls can have kids at age 13 and 14 so they can lock their boxes away. We live in a society that’s bombarded with explicit images of sex from TV shows commercials our music, in books, romance novels, magazine need I go on? We are all affected, still we tell people to abstain and refrain. We as adults are a bunch of hypocrites and fools. We make laws to hurt one another including ourselves. We are so quick to point fingers at the next person.

We are all victims and perpetrators of our own laws so we add to our own confusion. God’s true laws are written in our own natural behaviors and the way this universe manifest itself. We all need to put the book down for a minute and study life. That’s the only way we may find true wisdom.

Maybe our kids including our teenagers should be more guarded with stringent curfews at least until they are old enough to make and live with their own decisions and or mistakes. Just love.

+1 #10 Duane 2009-06-29 13:53 I really don’t like a lot of the comments on this subject. We all know that what the pastor did is wrong and no sensible ethical person could stand by his side; however what I don’t like about these incidents is the fact that people use them to stereotype Christians and taunt our religious belief. Mind I remind you that this piece of crap pastor or others of this kind is not the signature for our Christian faith and it would be appreciated if they are dealt with individually and not a representative of the Christian body. +2 #9 Brooklyn Girl 2009-06-24 13:54 Anybody thought of "praying" for the girls he turned into whores? Why does this pastor who has no wife, sells magic soap, deceives people and seeks out little girls, qualify as "just man". Is it because he went to seminary and got a doctorate? Apparently any fool can get a few degrees and open a church, and folks like you pay them homage and cover for their dirty little games. You are either very low in intelligence or a creep! Your response reminds me of the Clovis cartoon where the gunman tells his mother he is ready to step out to go do some business, and even though she knows he is going to be involved in criminal activity, all she does is remind him to wear his "guard ring" to protect himself. You bible thumpers — especially the women, KNOW that a lot of preachers are doing this in JAmaica , but you prefer to cover them with bible verses and the little girls have no one to protect them. STOP COVERING FOR THE MEN!! Quote

Rejoice not when thine enemy falleth, and let not thine heart be glad when he stumbleth :Thank God for his tender mercy and forgiveness that we have all received whether we realize it or not .Those of us that can and will let us pray for our Brother. -1 #7 Jen 2009-06-21 11:18 Yup. The good pastor was just following the commands of the Old Testament, since it says in the New, that not one jot or tittle should pass away, and that God is the same yesterday, today and forever. I think the church is confused. This is why so much feedback is being generated in the US press about this, and in the Jamaican press, precious little. Is it any wonder why the place is crammed with churches but there is so much per capita moral depravity for a small island? Quote

-2 #6 Katrina 2009-06-21 11:11 This is for Goldie: I wish more Christians were aware of some of the horrific commands in the bible and realize that they were written by men as they saw the world then. Take this passage — very frightening indeed from the scriptures and apply "Trust and obey" to it:

(Deuteronomy 21:10-14 NAB)

"When you go out to war against your enemies and the LORD, your God, delivers them into your hand, so that you take captives, if you see a comely woman among the captives …you may take her home to your house… you may have relations with her, and you shall be her husband and she shall be your wife. However, if later on you lose your liking for her, you shall give her her freedom, if she wishes it; but you shall not sell her or enslave her, since she was married to you under compulsion."

How are we doing? This is the actual word of God!
